TLDR is the title of this post. I'm currently out $6000 from attempting to do a $3000 balance transfer.
Credit Card 1 (Barclay Card US) Credit Card 2 (Local Credit Union)
My wife and I decided to take a trip this spring thanks to a nice bonus I got from work. Since we earn points on the Barclay card, we paid for the trip ($3k) using that and then planned to pay off the balance before it could accrue any interest.
Shortly after (Dec 12) that I found out our local credit union was offering 18 months no interest on balance transfers. We already had a card and met the requirements to be eligible for the promotion and I thought it might be nice to grow interested on my terms while I paid the balance down. I called the credit union and provided the information they needed to do the transfer and I was informed that a check ($3k) was mailed on the same day and the new balance ($3k) was loaded onto my credit union card.
Fast forward 2 weeks and I still have not seen a payment post to the barclay card so I reach out to the credit union who confirms that the check was mailed and cashed by the credit card company on Dec 20th. The credit union showed me an image of the cleared check with the endorsement by barclay card as verification.
I called barclay customer service and told them what happened and I was asked to provide a bunch of details regarding the payment which prompted them to open a case. The case was opened on Jan 5th and I was advised that it would take 7-10 business days. It has now been 12 business days since the case was opened and I've called, emailed and tweeted but all they tell me is that they will update the case and there is no information to provide.
I found out that the credit union used a cashiers check to make the payment which has me worried that I have little recourse or payment protection I can use and if a $3,000 payment is not made or applied in 5 days, I will be charged interest on a balance that was supposed to be paid off over 30 days ago. Not to mention that I now have a balance of $3,000 on the credit union card for a balance that never transferred. I feel like I have been robbed, can I call the police? Should I get a lawyer? I don't know where to go from here but something needs to happen as I should not be responsible for interest that generates as a result of this.
Can PF offer any advice?
