We recently bought a vacation home that we plan to rent out part of the year. With renting comes several considerations for us, including loss and theft of items.
For flatware, specifically, one of our challenges is that so many patterns come and go. You find a great deal one year, but 4 years later when you want to buy a few more spoons or whatever, the entire pattern has been discontinued and your only option is to buy a whole new set in a brand new pattern.
I'd like to find a good quality set that is not only durable, but also comes in a pattern that is likely to still be around 5-10 years from now. So, if someone does lose (or steals) a dinner fork for whatever reason, I can simply go buy a new one instead of having to chuck the whole set or go with mis-matched patterns. To me, this is a slightly different spin on the "BIFL" concept, but still core to the spirit of what BIFL is about.
I suspect that I may find what I want in commercial flatware, but I don't know enough about that area to even know where to start, especially in identifying patterns that have been and likely will continue to be around for years and years.
So, any suggestions?
