I'm not sure if this is the right sub for this but I didn't know where else to put it.
My husband and I are getting ready to move into his mother's house. We all have a great relationship. There will be no lease, we aren't going to pay rent, and none of the bills will be in our name. We will all be living together.
Since we aren't really "renting", are we tenants? Do we need renter's insurance since we aren't really renting, or will our stuff be covered under her homeowner's insurance? For the record I have been renting various houses ever since I moved out of my parent's house and have always had renter's insurance - my issue is just not knowing if it is even relevant in this situation.
We have quite a few things of value (such as furniture, TV, game consoles, a number of cameras, lots of gadgets and high end kitchen appliances, etc). What happens in case of a fire or other natural disaster where everything in the house is a total loss? What happens if the house is robbed but it is our stuff that gets stolen?
Thanks!
