Typically the earlier you book a hotel the better but it doesnt hurt to check the rate a week of so before you check-in to see if it has dropped! I just saved 65 dollars for my trip this weekend by doing this and as long as you're outside of the cancelation-fee window the reservations desk will be happy to do it for you.
