Hi PF! I've searched for a subreddit that fit's my question better but couldn't find one. I feel like this isn't entirely PF but since it does involve jobs and money, I hope it's okay to ask here.

TL;DR:

  • I'm a student

  • Got a higher salary right now but I don't like the job and I want to quit

  • Apple interns earn less than both googlers and what I earn now.

  • Apple project sounds more interesting

  • I like Google more and their company culture

  • Google interns earn more

  • Apple interns are happier than Google interns

  • Apple is working on an offer

  • Got my last interviews at Google next week.

Would you take the pay cut to work on something more interesting at Apple or rather work at Google? How can I politely tell Apple that I'm about to finish my interviews at Google so they can hurry up? Should I tell that to Apple?

I have a feeling Apple is working on a signing bonus too to match my current pay and that they need the time to get the confirmations etc and I don't want to stress them into giving me an incomplete offer while they're working on a bigger one.

Not-TL;DR:

My current situation: I'm currently working at [big company you've all heard from] as a software developer intern (I don't know how internships work in the US but basically I come to work twice a week and full-time between semesters. It's work like any other). I don't like the job that much because I barely do anything that fits my skills and by comparing what other students do, both at [big company you've all heard from] and elsewhere, I feel like I'm not gaining any new skills and that I shouldn't stay.

Therefore, I have decided to look for a job elsewhere.

I've interviewed at IBM, Apple and Google and so far was told from Apple that I got accepted and that they're working on an offer. The hiring manager asked me if I'm interviewing somewhere else and I told her that I'm interviewing at IBM and Google. Then she asked me how much I currently earn and I told her the exact numbers and that I got a signing bonus. She said that what I earn is a lot and is a very high salary for a student (and I am indeed on the higher end of the scale and from comparing between friends, I do earn more than my friends who work at Apple). She even asked me to send proof by mail that I got a signing bonus, probably because she thought I was trying to bs her (I have no problem with that and sent her the monthly pay report which also included my signing bonus) and then she said thanks and that they'll get back to me and that if I get further in other interviews that I should inform her.

Just a side note: I probably won't go to IBM because I don't think the position, team and project fit me. Plus, the interviews didn't go that well anyway lol.

Now, about Google, I have my last interview session on Monday. I've told her I'm about to get an offer from Apple and she said they'll try to speed up the hiring process.

Basically it comes down to Apple vs Google (let's say I get accepted):

Apple pros:

  • IMO the project is very interesting. It's not even out yet and the team is very new. They're currently only 3 software engineers and they've just hired 2 new students (me and someone else) and 2 more software engineers.

  • I've heard from other students at Apple that they're very happy there and from students at Google that they work on small and rather uninteresting things.

Google pros:

  • I like Google's culture a lot more. I use a Nexus phone, got a ton of Android Robot dolls and the company seems way happier while Apple seems stricter and "rigid" and rather cold lol.

  • I'd like to relocate later in life and have heard that it's easier to do so with Google because switching teams is no big deal.

  • Pay is better, from what I've compared between my friends.

Salaries:

With my signing bonus (I got all the money at once but if I quit before 18 months have passed, I have to return the partial sum, which is fine by me), I see it as an increase to my hourly wage because students work on average 1,000 hours a year so it's a couple extra $ per hour, for the first 18 months.

Google's base salary is the same for all students and is 18% higher than that of Apple. With my signing bonus I earn just a tiny bit more than Googlers (less than a dollar an hour more). Google does not offer a signing bonus.

Apple's salary is rather low in comparison to other companies in the area (Google, Microsoft, IBM, Intel, Qualcomm, Dell-EMC, start-ups etc) and it's somewhat bugging me because it feels like they try to use their name to get people to accept lower wages (as if they're saying: "yeah, but you'll get to work at Apple!")

  • How can I get them (Apple) to bump their offer up or at least match mine?

  • Should I accept the pay cut? The job sounds very interesting but that's always how they make it sound.

I have to note that they've (Apple) called me a second time and even asked me how much of my signing bonus I have to return if I quit [big company you've all heard from] so I have a feeling they're working on a signing bonus too.

  • Should I inform Apple that I have the next interview session at Google next week? how should I phrase it?

Personally, from a career-wise point of view, Apple is better for my skills. They are both very good companies to put on your resume and I don't think anyone will prefer a Googler over an Appler(is this even a word?) somewhere later in life.

  • Generally, what would you do in my situation?

  • Also, Apple said that their offer is valid for 48 hours, which is astronomically low. Any way to tell them that I need an extension, without trying to sound like I try to play them?

Thank you all so so much!
