Hi all - I apologize if this isn't the appropriate sub, but it feels like the closest thing I could think of that could give me good advice on how to further investigate.

My dad passed away a few years ago - he didn't have a lot in personal assets but he did work for the telephone company for around 28 years. It was explained to me that he had, at least at one point, a retirement account with his employer (Southwestern Bell at the time). At the time of his death he was divorced and did not have a will. When he died it was all a bit too much to process and I felt guilty that people would think that all I cared about was money so I made a concerted effort to never bring up anything about an inheritance. I was told early on in the process that any retirement money would go to me and my sister, however a few weeks later I was told that he had apparently gambled away his retirement on high risk investments. I never questioned it - it was unfortunately not very surprising.

Now that I'm a bit older, it occasionally weighs on me that I never did my due diligence in confirming any of this. Would anyone have any advice on how to go about getting more information on my deceased father's retirement account? I'm fortunate enough to be financially stable, but at the very least it would make me feel better to know that there isn't some account floating around out there that was never claimed. There are no family members that really have any additional information to give me so I'm mainly interested in how to properly query the former employer in order to get any information regarding the account.

Thanks for any assistance you guys can give, have always enjoyed this sub.
