Hello
I am 31 years old. My father was 73. We are in Massachusetts if that is relevant. We've been living in an apartment while I helped him the last several years. A lot of things were in his name and a lot of I will not be able to afford on my own so I believe I will have to cancel and adjust things as I go. I had some specific questions and was hoping maybe there are people here who can help me understand what my steps need to be. Regarding end of life, I know I have to call the Funeral Home tomorrow and set up his direct cremation and begin that process. Unfortunately, we can not locate any signs of him having Life Insurance. He had mentioned that he had it, but we can't see any evidence of it. I've spent hours scouring through his storage lockers, safe, emails, and bank statements and see nothing.

We both used the same bank, a Credit Union, and our accounts are on the same login. He is the primary account holder and my account is listed under his. He will likely receive a Social Security Check in August if I'm correct, which I know I am not to use. I don't believe I should cancel his account yet, and wait for a Death Certificate.

We have AT&T as a phone provider. The bill is incredibly expensive, around $110 a month. It is in his name still. The last time I spoke to AT&T they had told me that they would have to cancel the account and have my reapply to set up a new one, and it involves a credit check. I don't believe I'll be okay for that. However, I do own my phone outright (I bought it on my own and added it to the account). Am I able to take this phone and put my own plan on it, maybe a reduced price plan? I can cancel the account at any time, I am not under any sort of time gate anymore.

Cable/Internet/House Phone. My father had Xfinity in his name. We had cable, internet, and house phone. I do not have any intention of keeping cable or a house phone, I never used either. Is this something I can call Xfinity about, and say he has passed (after I have a death certificate, I'd imagine) and ask to have the plan changed to merely internet, or would I have to cancel the account altogether and have it changed? I don't want to be without internet, as it is my direct resource to most things right now.

Rent. While I did contribute and pay for rent, our apartment was in his name. The landlord has been in touch with me and said to let him know what happens. I'm assuming that it would be as simple as changing the name on the lease, but I'm not sure if there's more I should know or be aware of.

Electric/Gas. I know what company we have, but I'm not sure how to go about changing the account information to me.

Auto Insurance is payed through next year, but I believe at some point I will have to cancel it. I do not have my driver's license currently, but if I am able to achieve that soon I would take ownership of his vehicle. If that were to happen, I'd then have to try to get the insurance transferred to me, I believe?
This is all very fresh and new to me. I just saw him for the final time four hours ago so I'm coping hard. I know I do not need to figure things out in a single day but I'm trying to do what I can as soon as possible. If there are other things people may want to suggest I'm all ears. I did read the megathread and have a good idea of a lot of things (i.e. when the debtors come) but had these specific questions.
