I got curious this year.. I’ve always paid a local tax guy to do my taxes, but his prices keep going up so I decided to try it myself. I started with TurboTax (a company I consider evil) and hammered through all the numbers and they wanted to charge $80. I then went on the IRS free filing website and tried one of their free filing entities. I got the exact same return on both. However the IRS was free for federal, $40 for state. I was going to try to file my WI taxes for free, as well, but the WI return adobe acrobat form was really convoluted, and I was willing to pay the $40 to just push it through at that point. Just wanted to share that experience. I always wondered if those companies had “secret extra returns” they give you, and now that I tried both I can report, there is no difference. I had a W2 and mortgage interest and property tax, for reference as to how complicated my are (or aren’t in this case).
