I had a checking account opened a long time ago by a parent that I never used in years. It had about 5 bucks in it and I just let it sit there, I didn't have checks or a debit card to draw from the account.
Lo and behold one day I get a letter in the mail saying my account was charged off in the amount of $200. Someone had fraudulently charged my account and the bank continuously overdrafted me from there adding $170 in fees before they charged it off, all without me getting anything in the mail.
The bank teller says "well you had access to the online portal, and therefore you should have known it was overdrafted" but the portal said it still had money in the account, that is apparently not their problem (spoiler alert: it is). They basically told me to suck it up, there is nothing they can do.
I gathered screenshots of the account and wrote up what happened. I submitted a complaint to the consumer financial protection bureau who forwarded it to the FDIC. It took a few weeks but eventually I received a call from the a corporate representative of the bank who apologized. Their review showed that no one ever attempted to call me per their own policies and that they will be refunding me the full amount that was charged off.
If I had not submitted that complaint, I would have been SOL and out $200. The best part was going to the bank to have the teller who told me there was nothing they could do hand me the check :). Highly recommend if you have a legit complaint that you go through them. Thanks to this subreddit for making me aware of them as well!
