I was digging around a month or so ago and came across a really old post advising looking if any local hospitals are not for profit and their policy on financial aid. My partner ended up in the ER with an over $6k bill and luckily for us the hospital did end up being NFP. We made just over the financial limit for help, however they had us submit a hardship letter with our circumstances for the past year with some credit card statements to back it up.
Tldr: hospital dropped our $6k+ bill because we asked nicely
