Finance details: I'm 25, wife and I have saved $20k. We make around $4500 a month, expenses monthly (including food) is around $2,100. So, we save around $1600 a month.
I got a new job that I needed a car to get to, and the car market was absolutely atrocious in South Florida earlier this year. Mostly out of desperation, I purchased a 2003 Honda Accord for $2,200. The title is Not Actual Mileage because some dumbass rolled the odometer back 50,000 miles trying to sell it. The actual mileage is 250,000 on the car.
It ran well for 3 months, but it has been giving me issues now. The check engine came on for the IACV, I replaced it. Ran well for a couple days. Then, the check engine came on again. It drives very poorly currently. The issue is either the MAF sensor or an airflow problem. Also, the battery was older and died while I was working on the car.
I've put about $240 into the car (tires, IACV, oil change) and now am facing anywhere from $10 to $400 for the engine issues. Also, the new battery.
While that isn't much money to fix it up, driving a car that I feel is unreliable is causing me anxiety. I have mental illnesses and I've been kind of spiraling downwards over the whole thing.
I'm thinking of just selling the car as is, listing it on fb marketplace and craigslist for maybe $1500 or so. I would disclose the issues and condition of the car and title and link a Carfax.
The car market down here has really stabilized compared to where it was. Tomorrow I'm looking at a 2011 Mazda 3 with 130k miles on it, the owner wants $4k.
So, I'm just trying to ask for advice on if I should eat the $700 car value loss, the registration fees, and the money I put into the car. I could spent the money to get the car running again, but what if something else goes wrong next week? I'm just getting my life together the past few years and I like to ask for advice on most things, to seek wisdom from those who know more than I do.
Any responses would be very appreciated.
