Growing up, my dad's family (born in the Great Depression) spent a lot of time talking about how much they'd spent and saved and what good deals they'd gotten. Saving money was lauded and this rubbed off on me, but I've learned that when I jokingly tell my 20-something friends that did my own car repair or that an event costs more than I want to pay, they assume I can't afford it and sometimes try to buy stuff for me. (One friend bought me a Disneyland ticket when I said it wasn't in my budget.) How can I better communicate my desire to be thrifty, while not looking like I'm broke? I'm not. I just really like to prioritize saving money.
