I’ve been the GM at my candy store where we make and sell product in-house for almost 2 years. When we came back after lockdown last May, we were told that there was a freeze in all raises, so I did not get a raise last year.

When I was hired as the GM, I was given 10 admin hours a week that could be used for conducting interviews, doing inventory, paperwork, machinery upkeep, etc. I haven’t had that since we reopened. I’m expected to do everything during my labor hours now. I’m having to do the same or more work in less time, and it’s majorly taking a toll on my mental, physical, and financial health.

When I bring up my struggles with my DoO, he brushes me off and says that “all of the stores are running lean right now”. Now, I don’t know the other stores’ sales numbers, but my store is back up to 2019 numbers, yet I’m only allowed 1/3-1/4 of the labor hours. Comparing the same Saturday in 2019 to 2021, for example, I did more in sales by myself this year than 3 people did combined in 2019.

I overall like my job, but I’m burnt out. I don’t feel appreciated. And I don’t think I’m being fairly compensated for what it is that I’m doing. Other stores in the same shopping center are hiring assistant managers and shift leads at $2-5 more than I’m making as the GM. What should I say to my DoO to make my case for a raise? I’m currently making $16/hr (non-salaried), and would like to be making a minimum of $2 more and hour, but ideally closer to $4 more.
