Hello. I’m a 17 yo working admissions and parking sales at a local zoo. This is my first job, and it’s my first time consistently using a cash register.

I’ve been training with cash for a total of four days so far. The first, I came up 5 cents short. My supervisor wasn’t concerned and understood seeing as it was my first day, but I was still befuddled since I couldn’t recall messing up any transactions. The second day, I balanced. The third, I made one error that I informed a different supervisor of mine of before he counted me out and I came up $5 short due to it. He also understood and since the error was harmless, it wasn’t questioned. Today however, I came up $5 short again and I have absolutely no idea why. Today was abnormally busy, but similarly to my first day, I believed to have done every transaction as expected. I told my supervisor that I likely made the same error from my previous shift and he gave me a light warning.

While I haven’t been put in a troublesome situation due to these errors quite yet, I’m worried that this could become a trend since I was oblivious to 2/3 of my shortages.

Is this common for someone using a register for the first time? If so, how can one combat this problem of not realizing when a transaction was messed up? I consider myself to be pretty concentrated while I’m at work, so a problem such as this one is odd for me.

Also, I can guarantee that I am not stealing from my own drawer, and since workers at my job are separated by booths under surveillance, I highly doubt anyone else is.
