So I ordered a sweater from a company in California for about 29 euros with a shipping fee of 16 euros. Once the company had finally shipped the parcel I received a tax declaration from DHL asking me to pay them a total of €66,21. I live in the Netherlands (which is where the parcel has been sent to) and our customs charge a maximum of 12% for clothes originating from outside the EU. On top of the 12% customs fee there is also a 21% tax fee. That would mean the following: total cost of product with shipping (€45,41) + 12% customs fee (€5,45) = untaxed total (€50,86) the untaxed total (€50,86) + 21% taxes (€10,68) = total cost of goods with shipping customs and taxes included (€61,54)

With this being said, I should only be paying a total of €16,13 worth of customs and tax fees whilst DHL is asking me to pay €66,21. Their breakdown of this amount is as follows: €23,25 for "other levey charges", €17,55 for "advance payment fee" and finally €25,41 for "import taxes"

Could anybody please explain to me how DHL could even have came to this amount and if this is even legal? I am quite confused on this matter as my calculations left me with fifty euros less in fees than DHL's calculation.
