I recently had a terrible restaurant experience and hate to say it but left no tip on a $40 bill. I worked in the restaurant industry for a long time and have no empathy for the way our server handled everything. Long story short, I went with 3 other friends and we all left no tip. It’s been a few days and the credit charge transactions now show that we each gave a 25% tip. The one girl just got a $200 charge for a transaction she didn’t do a day after we went at a random location which might be related. We all reported it to our credit card companies and the one girl reported the situation to the local police. We called the restaurant and the owner answered. We told her that we got charged for tips we did not leave and she got angry and said “This is no McDonalds, if you don’t leave tip, we tip.” Then hung up on us. We called again, this time recording, and she admitted to giving tips that we did not consent to again and angrily hung up. There’s no gratuity charge listed on the bill so I don’t think she’s allowed to do that. The restaurant owner just called in completely different attitude (acting nice) saying she just left the police station and explained what happened. She said we need to call back and give her our credit card numbers for the refund or else she can’t do anything. I don’t trust her...I also live an hour away from this location. Is this legit? What do I do?
TLDR; Restaurant admitted to adding tip on credit card receipt without our consent. Now after talking with police, owner called asking for credit information to give refund. Do I give her my card number?
