What is the best way to filter water for use in a humidifier and steam cleaner? (alternative to buying gallons of distilled water)

Like the title says. I use about a gallon a day for a single humidifier, once I can afford it I will purchase a second humidifier which will use half a gallon (only on at night).

I have hard water. Two newly bought humidifiers broke within months, so I want to make the current one last.

Steam cleaner is used too infrequently to have data on.
