The Barbell Strategy for Buying Quality Stuff

I read this article a while ago and I feel like it had heavily influenced my views on frugality. The basic principle is to either buy cheap or expensive things, but nothing in the middle. For example buy a really good winter jacket and a cheap T-shirt, but not a mid-level version of both.

I really like this idea (and many of the author’s others), but I was wondering how you view it? Is it the most ethical way to consume, do you fall into the trap of buying more things on the expensive side, do you love it?
