The person who does payroll at my work asked me to select a beneficiary for my retirement plan because I currently do not have one. I know it's unusual, but I don't have anyone to list. I'm not in a great place in my life socially and don't have a relationship with the few family members I have.
Is there some kind of penalty I will face or an issue that could arise if I continue without a beneficiary listed? Context: regular 401(k) in the USA
