I grew up in a cult. When I left it, I was excommunicated and lost all my friends. But now I feel much less compelled to buy things like gadgets and new cars because I don't have anyone to show them off to.
I'm not complaining or seeking pity. But most people have never had the experience of losing all their friends and thus don't realize how much they buy simply to impress others.
