Hii!! Sorry if it isn’t allowed, this is also a x-post with r/endo and wanted more options. So I’ve just had a virtual consultation with an endometriosis specialist from Mexico and it was great, I felt so validated and understood. I’ve been struggling with chronic pain and was diagnosed with possible endometriosis and unfortunately there are no specialists near me and the nearest is 4 hours and is out-of-network and probably would cost me a fortune to do if I happened to get lucky and get a referral.

I’m planning on traveling to Mexico from the US to see this specialist who is internationally vetted and the doctor -from Mexico- mentioned I’m not his first abroad patient so that was reassuring, I have friends and family in Mexico and thus only be paying for tickets to get there and will be staying with my parents.

So now it comes the question, for folks who have successfully traveled for surgery abroad: How do you get it to be covered by insurance? Do I call my insurance company in advance to let them know I’m scheduling a surgery? Do I claim it as “travel emergency” and file a reimbursement without letting them know? Will they even cover endo treatment in travel coverage? Will any of this work or do I just pay it all out of pocket and start eating tuna and acquire debt?

Either way I’m beginning to save as much money as possible so I can pay some upfront costs. If my insurance company manages to cover it, it will be around 3-5k including plane tickets, however if not it can be a lot more money. Still it will be half of what probably it would cost me here in the US.

Thanks again and sorry
