My friend who lives in Santa Monica, California is letting me pitch out a tent in his backyard to live in. So far I’ve been out here for about a month and already noticed, what appears to be, a few black and brown mold spots on the ceiling of the tent. As recommended on the manufacturer’s website, I purchased some Losso mold and mildew stain remover and currently waiting for it to arrive. I’ve also put up a tarp over the roof and haven’t seen the appearance of new black or brown spots.

The manufacturer states that you should not pitch the tent out for an extended period of time (3 weeks or more) on moist soil for canvas rot can occur. The rainy season is here and the soil here is going to turn to a wet muddy sludge. Would a tarp underneath be enough to prevent, or at least, slow down the rate of canvas rot? The manufacturer states on their website that sand, gravel, or a wooden slated platform all work for extended use. Basically in an area that can stay dry or has good drainage.

I was thinking of building some kind of raised platform with cinderblocks and pressure treated plywood. But wouldn’t the plywood warp from walking over it? The tent is 10’x10’ so I was considering getting four 5’x5’ plywood sheets and gorilla gluing them to cinderblocks. I’m assuming that’ll be cheaper than one 10’x10’ plywood piece.

I was considering just getting a cheap small tent with a full rainfly and selling the Kodiak, which I would hate to do because I really like how spacious it is. Or maybe I can save it for next summer. Any suggestions are welcome.
