I moved in with my friend and her husband because she is a cancer patient in remission, they needed a roommate and my lease was up and I also needed a place to go [January 2017]. Six months later we moved to a new city together [May 2017] (this was planned)
Roommate #1 is a paraplegic epileptic cancer survivor and my really good friend. We moved into a house together rent was pretty cheap. 1500 for a 3/2. But someone in the past decided to be cheap and put new wood flooring over the old flooring without moving cabinets and stuff. A pipe broke and slowly filled the gap between the two floors. It probably leaked for weeks before we noticed any water. The property manager was notified told us to check the refrigerator because it was nearest the water, long story short. Within 2 weeks the property management company had to tear out the flooring and it smelled like sewage.
We ended up having to move into an apartment because the rental company didnt have any wheelchair accessible houses- we looked on our own and the houses we could afford were way out f the way.
The Apartment is a 3/2 for $1705 + $30 for a couple of small on property storage units, for odd shaped things like bikes and extra adaptive equipment.
I have SSDI myself - coming in at $1200 but I got a job with the VA making 14.54/hr full-time with benefits in April and per SSDI rules that money goes away after a year. So my last payment is April 2020, which should be payable in May 2020.
I've been paying 1/3 of the rent and utilties in one payment to roommate #3 (cancer patients now husband) About 2 weeks ago- they hit me with theyre getting a divorce, she's applied for SSI and once she gets approved and can find a place shes leaving. We just resigned the lease a month before this.
So at some point soon my rent will be around $870+ half the utilities. I usually pay everything in one payment so I'm not sure how much the internet and utilities costs.
Because of SSDI, I've been tossing $1000/month into my TSP/401k with plans to drop my withholding to 5% (max match) once the SSDI stops- I also have 30k in a high yield savings account and I'm looking for positions higher up the GS scale.
I spend a lot of time going out to eat for dinner mostly because I have clinical depression and cooking for 1 in our small apartment isnt that easy. So there is one way to save some money, (need to work on that for health reasons too)
I think I'll be okay, really just looking for someone to bounce ideas off of- about how to make the best of a meh situation. Any advice?
I have no debt, a big medical bill ($2600- for new orthotics, thats on hold because we've been squabbling about it) My car is a hand-me-down.
