I recently moved to a major city, and now incur major costs as a result. Following some quality advice around here, I’ve managed to cut down on some of those expenses, but one remains that I haven’t yet tackled: Internet.
So, the leasing company for my apartment basically gave told me that if I want Internet, I need to reach out to a representative form Verizon that handles this sort of thing. After calling, I was told that they’ve got 3 options: no contract 200mbps/200mbps for $39.99, 400mbps/400mbps for $59.99, and 940mbps/880mbps for $79.99.
Now, the first two apparently come with $50 prepaid Visa cards, and the third one with “$200 towards select Samsung tech or Chromebook 3,” along with free router rental. Which certainly sounds nice, but it’s still a hefty sum paid every month for a year. Speaking of the router, that would be $12 a month rented, or $200 to just buy one from Verizon.
Just for context, I am definitely going to be in the city for the next two years. I use the Internet a fair amount, including for online gaming and streaming. But I’m not really sure what I actually need, or if there’s anyway of trimming this monthly expense down. Have any of you encountered similar deals? Do I have any leeway, or am I just stuck? The only thing I thought of was the possibly of just buying my own router from some other vendor, but would that even work? And if I am indeed stuck with these prices, do you think it’s worth springing for the more expensive one?
