I get a lot of basics at CVS since I can get a lot of them for nearly free due to their lenient coupon policy. If you are willing to play the coupon game there, you can save a ton of money.

One thing I've learned is that the order you hand the coupons to the cashier can have an impact on the amount you save. A had a classic example yesterday.

I was buying 3 items and had a $4 off coupon for each of them. I also had a 25% off purchase coupon from CVS. With each item costing $10, these were my two choices:

1: The three items are rung up for $30. I hand the three $4 off coupons reducing the cost to $18, Then I use the 25% off coupon to save another $4.50 to end up paying a total of $13.50.

2: The three items are rung up for $30. I hand the 25% off coupon that saves $7.50 bringing the price down to $22.50. I then use the three $4 off coupons to bring the price to $10.50.

By making sure to use the 25% off coupon first, I saved an extra $3 dollars on the same transaction using the exact same coupons. For this reason, I always hand the cashier the coupons to scan in the order I want them scanned instead of handing them all and letting the cashier scan them randomly.
