I own an old 2 story house in Maine that I am going to be remodeling this summer. The previous owner began a renovation and ran out of funds before she sold. A large central beam spans the great room and supports the center of the second floor. The beam is supported on both ends in the walls, and currently is held in the center by 2 temporary jack posts. The beam is lined up directly above a beam under the first floor which is directly supported by concrete pilings in the basement. My question is how do I install permanent supports for this beam to replace the temporary jack posts? I have looked at the Akron permanent posts (with the thought of casing them out to hide them), but the installation guides say that those need to be encased in concrete after being set.Do I need to get custom wooden posts cut? And if so, how do I properly mount it to the floor? Everything I read on the internet is either about hollow decorative columns or porch columns, or basement columns that get set in concrete.Any input would be welcome. Because this is a sparsely populated part of Maine, getting a professional will be difficult and costly. I understand the importance of getting it structurally correct though, and dont want to half-ass it. via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2WKfoCv
