We had a 9 year old mattress which we bought new for about $1200. Both the wife and I noticed we weren't sleeping well and my back had started hurting so we began shopping for a new one... Hurray we get a surprise $1k+ bill! Or not. A friend mentioned they had just had their mattress replaced under warranty so I looked into ours. If the mattress sagged by more than 1.5" at any point, within 10 years, you get full replacement value provided there were no stains on it. We had to send 5 pictures to the manufacturer showing the cleanliness and the sag with a string and tape measure. It was barely sagging 1.5" in one spot on my side but sure enough we got approved and received every cent we originally paid towards a new mattress. Fresh new warranty and you can bet we'll check again once this one is 8-9 years old.
Also, use a mattress protector! Costs $80 and I'm sure the mattress would have been stained voiding our warranty if we hadn't!
