So it occurred to me that most people keep a large fraction of their value on some website (like Vanguard) where they don't know a single soul in real life. So what would happen if a data center of theirs was hit by a hurricane and they didn't have proper backups or an unlikely bug wiped out just your account? (Sure - unlikely but still.)
How do you protect yourself against something like that? How do you know they have good backups?
