My girlfriend currently works as a head supply chain planner for a Fortune 500 company. She is 25, makes mid 70’s, has no debt except our mortgage which for now, she pays (along with all of the bills). Her commute is about an hour.

A few months back she was up for a promotion but was unsure if she would get it. I had her apply to jobs as an “incase you do not get the promotion”. She did get the promotion a week ago, but last night she was contacted by a potential employer to come in for an interview.

Her new position would be a 5-10minute commute, for another Fortune company. She is still unsure as to the pay.

She asked me today if she should go to the interview or not. Her current employer does value her. They have promoted her before more tenured people. She likes her boss, but her job is very stressful as they expect everything from her (she does not say NO to anyone). Her friend just got a 40,000$ raise leaving for another company, but money is not the biggest factor for her (commute, who she works with, hours worked, and other “quality of life”). I told her to take the interview and decide how she feels down the line.

What are your thoughts? When should people be looking to move jobs? Should she feel bad for “leaving her boss without her best planner”? And hurting the companies “toughest product” by leaving?
