Alexander the Great called his citizens to him to pay homage to his new rule. Diogenes was missing. Alexander goes to his home to find him sunbathing outdoors. In in full royal pomp and splendor, royal retinue en force, Alexander stands above him, casting a shadow over the supine Diogenes.

"Have you anything to say to me?" Alexander asks Diogenes.

"Could you please stop blocking the sun?" retorts Diogenes, nonplussed.

Furious, Alexander storms off.

"What a foolish man," one of his aides remarks.

"You are wrong," replied Alexander. "For if I could not be Alexander, I would proudly be Diogenes."
