My wife & I bought an old house recently, about 2 acres, some wooded. House is paid for. Eventually our goal is as close to total finacial freedom as possible, so we can travel more. One obstical to that is trash & recycle collection services. We live in upstate NY and pay about $35 a month for someone to come and take our trash away. Most of our waste comes from packagings from groceries. I do want to compost but we have harsh cold winters, is indoor composting a thing? Unhealthy off-gassing? Groceries are expensive enough as it is, and I just feel like it's such a waste to have to pay even MORE money for someone to take it away. Plus, shoveling snow at the end of the driveway is exhausting, and if you don't do it perfectly then the trash services get grumpy and wont take your trash. It's annoying and exhausting, after a full work day, even with a snowblower cause the snowplows compact the snow into hard ice chunks. You know how manay local Gala apples I can buy with $35usd? Almost 14Kilos! (give or take). I'm looking for creative ideas and solutions to get rid of this bill and service, so my wife and I can be more free. I know some places and contries burn their garbage, but I cannot fathom or get on-board with burning plastic items, (shampoo bottles, orange juice containers, etc.) without impacting the environment. I mean, i plan on installing a woodburner at some point (as a backup heating method to gas) which would alow me to make paper bricks from cardboard and newspaper. Has anyone else freed themselves from this bill and how did you do it and what ideas or information to share?
