I'll be honest, I am not holding on to these things for environmental reasons. I care about protecting the environment, but not as much as others. I'm holding on to them because I hate spending money and because there is a certain pride in being a responsible owner. It feels really good to have some money stashed away in an emergency fund ... really good. And it feels good to be able to say, "No, I don't have to get rid of it after 3 years because I took care of it."
I'm a bit of a tech-nerd (engineering grad) so maybe I just care more but there is no way in hell the X, S9, or Pixel2 are worth anywhere close to what they're asking for those phones. And while we're at it most flagship tablets and laptops are overpriced too.
I run in tech-loving circles so perhaps my friends just like to bust my balls about having an old phone and not having the latest technology, but specs and processors be damned; the most important number is the price.
I'm proud to have old things that still work, run, and meet my every need. I won't be spending money on any replacememts until those ones die.
