Project PhotosI’ve been wanting to add a fiber Optic Ceiling to my home theatre for some time now, and I finally had the time late last year to start and finish the project over a long weekend. What initially sparked the project start, was finding the fiber kit on sale via amazon. HereI drew up the project in CAD, and then went to the hardware store to purchase lumber.1x2 Select Pine for Rear Frame (Drywall) 1x8 Select Pine for Side Trim 1x4 Select Pine for Front Trim 1/2” Drywall Sheet (4’x8’) Quart of Paint for the Drywall, and some of the Trim (“Authentic Black” by Dutch Boy) Quart of PolyShade Stain for the Trim Hardware to rig/hang the structure to the ceiling. Philips Hue Lightstrip kit, plus extensions. When you get your fiber kit, I would suggest cutting 4-6” off the end so you can use those to have ‘locators’ in all of your drill holes.I decided it would be best to build this in 2 parts so moving it from the garage to the basement by myself would be easier.Build the Frame for the DrywallAttach Drywall to the frameSpackle/mud drywall prior to paintingAssemble the sheets of drill hole locators into one large sheet.Drill holes with a bit sized for your fiberRemove drill hole sheet, and insert 4”-6” pieces of fiber into each hole. Push the locators flush to the drywall on the side that would be painted.Paint the drywall, allow to dry, apply a second coat.Set aside the Drywall frame and build the “trim frame”. The drywall frame will slide into the trim frame later on in the project, so confirm measurements before building the trim frame.Build the trim frame and stain the “visible” sides of it. Paint the “inside” black to match the drywall.Relocate everything to the install siteSet the drywall frame into the Trim frame. The top end will be flush.Once aligned, I secured them together. Now is when the fiber “locators” come in handy, you will go through and run a fiber from the emitter to each of the “locators”. You want to feed through at least 4” of fiber, if not more.I secured the fiber down with some tape as I was working to keep it out of my way.Once all the fiber is run, go through and put a dab of Regular Elmers glue on the back side of each fiber. Allow to dry before trimming.Raise the entire structure to the ceiling and mount it.Trim the fiber. DO NOT trim it flush to the drywall, allow a short length to hang through the drywall. I found turning a small pair of Diagonal Cutters with the “Open” end up, and that was the perfect length of fiber hanging through the drywall.Add the Hue LightstripEnjoy! via /r/DIY http://bit.ly/2BiUjqC
