I am a low to middle class income earner (38k for this year) and I'm being slapped with a $700 NC state tax bill and only getting back a laughable a $12 federal refund.
I don't understand how this happened since I always select "0" on my employee tax form so I will try to make sure I don't underpay the government. Last year, with similar statistics although less pay since I only started working full-time in June, I had an $800 refund.
I did get married in November 2018, but even if I switch the tax software to say "single," I still have the same exorbitant fees. This leads me to believe it isn't a marriage penalty.
I did put 20% of my income to my 401k this year, I don't know if that makes a difference. I am concerned and want to make sure this doesn't happen again, since we are closing on a house in 2 weeks and this is a lot of money to pay.
Thank you in advance!
