I'll keep it short and concise.
Here's some background info on me
I'll be entering college soon with some different options and I want some solid, honest advice, especially from people who have gone through this and can share some personal experiences.
I have a few financial options, and I don't know which would be the smartest and specifically, why.
First option is staying in-state and going to my state honors college on a full tuition . I've worked my ass off during school, and was lucky enough to get full tuition covered in state. I would only be paying room and board, meals, books, the other stuff that isn't covered. MAX spent each year is 10 k
Second option is going to a top private college (top ranked by places like US news and world report) with expensive tuition. My family isn't going to qualify for a ton of financial aid, probably making it necessary for me to take out student loans...I'm not sure how much because that's dependent on financial aid offers and how much parents are willing to shell out. Could someone clarify what internal loans are? If I wanted to ask my parents for money I could loan from them, if they have it, then I wouldn't have to pay interest?
Calculated cost per year might be around 50k per year--but that's a rough estimate
There's definitely a cost-benefit tradeoff thing here between my in-state school and a private college ...going to a school with lots of connections and better placement into grad school, med school, law school etc etc. could mean I'll be getting a job right after college or earning more to pay off those student loans.
What should I be doing money-wise right now??? Getting a job flipping burgers at McDonald's isn't going to do much in making a dent in the college tuition I'll be paying for the next few years.
Off topic question----- Why and how do student loans become so all-consuming for so many people?? Is it the interest? Any personal experiences??
Note: Please give me suggestions of other subreddits to post this on--thanks.
Note 2: I'm aiming to go to grad school, undergrad isn't the end of the road. For those curious about what I want to study... I don't know. I haven't found a "specific passion" and it'll also be dependent on where I go to school and if/how much debt I'll have.
EDIT: A LOT of redditors are telling me to stay in-state and go to my honors college for a very low cost. Logically speaking, this is the best option. Personally, I really, really don't want to stay and I don't want to live in state--that's the crux of the conflict
EDIT 2: OK, I think the reason I'm getting a skewed result in FAVOR of my in-state college is because of the wording in my post . When I say "expensive private college", I mean to say colleges like the Ivy league, and top liberal arts colleges (Amherst etc), NOT expensive private schools that are exclusively catered as essentially finishing schools for the children of the 1% (admittedly, Ivies and the such are, but I'm referring to schools like Colgate, Bowdoin). My question specifically is: Are ivy-league comparable schools worth it if I don't know specifically what I want to study yet?
