I started an internship with a start-up company my last semester of college. It’s a very small company of about 3 employees and my employer.
I first started as an unpaid intern. I then graduated and started getting paid through Zelle. Approximately $2,000 a month. I never filled out a single piece of paperwork in regards to my taxes. No W-2 or anything along those lines. He tells me that I am acting as an independent contractor and will have to report my taxes on my own but he also tells me when to come in and where to work.
I’ve been extremely nervous about getting royally screwed on taxes so I’ve been frugal with my spending and have saved probably more than I should.
Should I expect something from the IRS in the mail? Do I reach out to them first? Am I going to have to pay way more in taxes than I should because of this? Am I being taken advantage of for being a recent graduate? Any info would help.
