My partner and I have been looking for homes for rent. Using a few different sites we found a nice house for rent. We went out to see and had a look. The house was empty but maintained. I noticed there was no for rent sign but it wouldnt be the first time I rented a place without a for rent sign in the yard.
I emailed the owner back, explaining that we were interested. I didnt think to ask for a tour at this time. We talked about pet fees and he sent me an application. It asked for name, address, phone number, place of employment, date of birth, social security number, reason for moving and expected move in date. He also asked for copies of my ID and a selfie of me holding the ID. My partner also sent the same info over.
Within hours he got back to be saying we were approved. Warning sirens finally started going off in my head. I asked to tour the inside before signing paperwork. He said his financial manager was out of town and he couldn't leave his barracks to tour the house but I was welcome to drive by. This was the last communication between us.
I tried to freeze my credit with the 3 major bureaus. Experian went through fine, transunion said their verifier was down and the equifax one prompted me to call during their hours. Their help line is closed.
What do I do now? I woke up my partner and he thinks I'm over reacting and doesn't understand why I think its a scam. He started the process but went back to bed as he isn't functional when he's this tired. I'm going to get him to call the bureaus tomorrow after work. Thankfully I didn't give out any credit card or bank information but I am still going to call my credit card company and bank tomorrow. So how boned am I? What do I do now?
