I'm 35 and up until this point my whole life has been a mess. I've spent the last few years working shitty jobs and spending my money on alcohol and drugs. I have suddenly lost a parent and now I have a windfall due to inheritance. I am currently unemployed and will not have a home in about 2 months. I am currently in San Jose, CA. I have no real family, no friends, no girlfriend, no job. After all debts are paid I will be sitting on around $315k cash. I have severe depression and anxiety which makes employment extremely difficult.

What steps should I take for this money? Keep in mind I know absolutely nothing about investing. I will probably be low income the rest of my days so need this as some type of safety net.

So far I'm looking to do the following:

  • Moving to a lower cost of living location.
  • Having an emergency fund of $20k.
  • Renting a cheap studio.
  • Putting the money in no risk savings accounts for the moment.
  • Get a job ASAP.

After this I have no idea, buy a property? Invest?

I also hold a EU passport so am not tied to the US and willing to relocate.

Thank you for any and all insights.
