Not sure if this is the correct sub, but don't know where else to post:
In my current position I'm underpaid compared to people doing similar jobs, and even with exceptional results the bonus payments would be very modest. When I took the job the offer was noticeably below my asking salary, but the salary was acceptable as I didn't have a lot of experience and not much obligations. Also it is an interesting position and certainly helps to improve the CV.
I have been working at this position for soon 5 years. Now I have been thinking about asking for a significant increase in my salary because I've family now and cannot afford to be underpaid any longer. The alternative would be to find a new job that pays better. ( +30%, likely more. But honestly I would need at least +50% to stop looking for another position)
Now it happens that just now the company has to do some reorganizing and offered/asked me to take over more responsibilities (it's about the same kind of work I do already but for new products/customers). This change helps them to safe money and streamline the process. That means there must be room for a raise.
I plan to accept the new responsibilities, but at that opportunity I also hope to get clear with my boss about my salary expectations. The salary that would make me comfortable to work with them for the long term would be +75% of my current salary ( bonus payments included), and my position is that for everything less than +50% I will be looking for a new job.
But how to communicate this? I want to keep a good relationship with them even if the negotiations fail, since in any case I'l likely keep working for them for another 6-12 months even without increase in salary. Also they are not in a position to fire me.
I'm often too direct, for example in my last company my request for more salary didn't get me fired but I certainly managed to shock my (very self confident) boss to a degree where she started to stutter for a moment. And I really want to avoid such a situation this time.
Any advice?
