I'm the breadwinner in the family and my wife is the bill-payer (among many, many other things). She's always done our taxes in TurboTax. I take the kids out of the house for the day so she can scream and cry by herself and when I come back there's a neat little package. It's worked well for 20 years.

In 2017, our financial situation got more complicated. College expenses, investments, multiple retirement accounts and possibly some donations. We both would like a professional (above the grade of the walk-in Tax Day Specials) to handle it, but we have no idea how to choose someone or what the initial interactions look like. We're both mildly-to-moderately socially anxious, so just cold-calling is out of the question.

How do you find this person? And, just as important, what does that first contact look like and what materials should be prepared beforehand? What's the cost? What questions am I failing to even ask?

(We would probably also have some non-tax tasks for this person from time to time, if that makes a difference. For instance, we started a trust to simplify some after-death issues but we haven't put all our assets into it because we don't really understand how.)
