I doubt he was the only one who did this, but my dad always had a box of "standard gifts" in the house.
Basically, when he found a gift on sale a lot of people would like he would buy it and throw it in a box.
That way whenever a friend or co-worker had a suprise birthday coming up or something had a he had a gift already.
Some good ideas are things like candles, animal toys (for pet owners), and nerf guns
