I rented a text book from Amazon for 19.97$

The book mostly sat on the same shelf for a semester.

I returned it in the same condition I received it. Fair, obviously used.

I'm being charged 214.63$ for the book because of "water damage".

There sending the book back to me so we'll see about this water damage.

This book is currently selling new on Amazon for 24$.

Amazon's initial response:

Thanks for conforming.

Its an automated system and nothing can be done in this case.

I'm wondering if I can dispute this on my credit card?

Maybe a small claims court case?

Update:

After the initial chat and two frustrating phone calls I finally got someone who seems just as frustrated with the automated book return as I am. I have another packing slip to send the same textbook back again. The notice says that the 214.63$ will be refunded in 3-5 business days. I'll update again then.

PSA:

If the cost to rent a textbook is very low and the full buyout cost for the textbook is very high consider passing or at least take pictures when the book arrives and when you ship it back.
