I used to pride myself on my good credit and fiscal responsibility. Had a FICO score of 807. Then about 7+ years ago I moved in to my significant other’s (now wife’s) rented house where everything was in her name. My car had already been paid off at the time and I still own it. I’ve got no debt as I pay the credit card I’ve had since I was 18 off every month. My school loans were paid off 15 years ago. My cellphone is on a family plan under my wife’s name. I’m essentially off the grid. I just figured the no balance and on-time full payments on a credit card I’ve had for decades would be enough to prevent my credit from atrophying. I used to be able to qualify for the best rates on a mortgage but I just got declined for a Crate & Barrel card for lack of credit. (That APR, by the way, is comically atrocious unless that is actually the going rate these days!!?)
So it appears my credit isn’t bad. It’s that it’s basically non-existent.
What’s my best course of action to get my beloved credit back? Would merely switching some utilities to my name do it?
