Hi r/DIY, I recently began repairing a patch of crumbling grout in my shower and have run into an additional problem. The shower is a walk-in and has tiled floors and walls. However, the wall-floor joint is grouted instead of caulked, and it is a section of this grout that needed repair. After querying r/DIY, I began removing grout in this joint around the shower with the intention of caulking it. However, I've run into another issue. The grout behind the spot of crumbling is dark and soft (see photo). I'm assuming it is wet and may explain why the grout was crumbling to begin with. I've had a fan blowing on it over night, but it has yet to dry. My questions are: 1) Is this something I should worry about? 2) Should I dry it completely (if possible) before caulking? and 3) should I hire someone to come and look at it? I'm worried about a leak or substantial water beneath the floor causing other pricey problems down the line. Some relevant information based on other forums I've read: We bought the house about 4 years ago. The owner was a general contractor who built the house himself in 1997. In general everything he's done has been above code, so have no reason to believe that the shower is any different. The wall with the wet grout is an external, second-story wall and should have no plumbing in it. The shower drain in the middle looks lower than the rest of the floor, so I think the floor is properly sloped. There is one other soft spot in the corner, along the same wall. The problem areas are soft throughout and not just on the surface. The previous owner was also good enough to save and leave us some of the grout, which is non-sanded product from Polyblend.Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers.https://ift.tt/2QTyW4X via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/2zdLY6b
