Opting-out of prescreened offers from credit card and insurance companies has cut down my family's junk mail significantly. This 1 time action (technically once every 5 years) did the most to reduce our junk mail, but took the least amount of time (just a few minutes).

You can read about the details of the opt-out from the FTC here: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0148-prescreened-credit-and-insurance-offers. They link to the optoutprescreen site that I reference below. By itself, it might seem like a sketchy site, but they are recommended by the FTC.

  1. Go to https://www.optoutprescreen.com
  2. At the bottom of the page, click the "opt-in or opt-out" link
  3. Select "electronic opt-out for 5 years" on the new page. You could permanently opt-out, but you can't do that all online
  4. Fill out the form. Note, you don't need to provide your SSN, although they say it helps to process the opt-out. You could try filling out the form without sensitive information first.

For me, it took a few weeks before the credit card offer mail started to dry up. By far the most bang-for-your-buck action I took to cut down mailbox clutter.
