Too many people think financial planning is only about the money. And of course, money is the foundational part of any financial plan. Tim Maurer, a contributing writer on Forbes and director of financial planning at Bam Advisors, has a tagline he uses to describe personal finance - personal finance is more personal than it is finance.

If the plan you create doesn't match the values you profess, it's unlikely to be successful. You will be more apt to chase the next shiny object that comes your way with a promise of financial success.

Tying your plans to a set of values, a purpose, a "why" can help you stay on track when those shiny objects come your way. Or when the market tanks. Or when life happens and throws you off your game.
