I got a notice that the assessed value of my home was going up from $85k to $99k, which means a substantial increase in property taxes. I sent in an appeal form along with pictures of my home and printouts from recently sold similar homes in my area. A few weeks pass and I got a letter stating they reassessed and the new value is $91k, saving me $200 a year in taxes.
Obviously, this process can differ from town to town, but never simply accept a new assessment without spending a few minutes to fight it.
