So I took a promotion back in January and my new location was San Francisco. It was a 67% pay increase, and it was pretty much enough to the point where if I took the promotion, it was my fiancees salary for the year. So we’ve decided she’s gonna relax for a couple of months then find a new job in the new year.
The issue at hand is all the costs associated with moving from the Midwest to California. Transporting my stuff was paid for by my company which helped substantially. However, the cost of living is ludicrous. I sold my 1br condo for a 10% gain and it’s all being pretty much wiped out because my rent is $900/mo more (for a junior one bedroom) than what I was paying. I was able to save almost $4000/mo for this year and will have $140,000 for a down payment on a home by the end of this year, but it’s overwhelming to think that we’re gonna be living frugal on my salary.
As of now, I have my 401k maxed out, employer maxes it out too, I put 5% into an ESPP and planning on saving $2000/mo now instead of $4000. Just looking for some words of advice or encouragement.
