I finally took the advice of PF and moved the majority of my savings from my low interest savings account to an Ally account at 1.9%. But somewhere along the way, something got messed up, and it tried to initiate the initial balance transfer twice - resulting in an overdraft; something I've had happen exactly one other time in the past ~15 years.
I called the bank I was transferring out of, and despite the fact that I had just moved the majority of my money OUT of their service, they quickly and politely removed the overdraft fee for me.
Similarly, a few years ago I missed a CC payment by ONE day because I'd been traveling for months and just plain lost track of the calendar days. I called the company, they saw I'd paid my balance in full every single month since account inception, and they immediately removed my late fee and marked the payment as on-time.
Moral of the story: if you're good with your finances and you make a dumb mistake, call your bank / credit card company / etc and discuss it. Chances are you can get fees refunded, late statuses erased, and keep that credit score up.
