I'm posting from a new Reddit account. I had my last one for over two years and deleted it. I made this new one, and I'm really shocked by how much this subreddit has changed since I was last here.

This group is the reason that I deleted all my social media. I came here because I knew that there were people out there that understood the dangers of constantly being notified digitally. I also enjoyed the anticonsumerist sentiment on here.

But there has been a massive shift in this subreddit. Lots of posts on smartphones, retirement, taking the easy route, and working less.

One thing to point out is that Simple Living does not equal an easy life

Simple Living is never going the easy route in life. It is embracing voluntary hardship. It's taking into account how modern society has become dependent on technology and that modern society is robbing us of joy. Voluntary hardship is a good thing. You should want to live a simpler life because it makes you better off in more than one way. Simple Living is simple but simple does not mean easy. Simple can be hard. Just like it's a simple task to deadlift heavy weight but the act itself is actually difficult. The movement is not complex. It's simple. Raising a family is simple. But raising a family is not easy. These two concepts cannot be misconstrued into one.

I've seen more things on here about working less, not borrowing, and moving to the country. The country will not make your life simpler. You make your life simpler where you are. If you want to work less, then spend more consciously. Your work is your income, but if you cannot control spending then you will never be able to live a life of not worrying about your finances. Being more conscious of your spending is simple. But it sure as heck ain't easy.

Simple living is not an easier way of life. It is a conscious decision to embrace voluntary hardship by rejecting ideas of modern life. Simple Living is a simplification of modern society. It is not necessarily easier. I would argue that is harder. But because it is harder, it is a better life. Not having the comforts all the time accessible to us make us better people. This subreddit needs a gut check. You have decide if you want an easy life or a simpler life. Because a simpler life will result in you doing things the hard way now. Simple does not mean easy.
